Murud Janjira Beach is located along the Konkan coast in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. Its golden sands and clear blue water make it a perfect destination for weekened & to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. The word ‘Murud’ is derived from the Konkani word’morod’ & the Arabic word Jazeera meaning Island.

One of the highlights of murud janjira beach is the historic Jala-durga (water fort) or janjira fort. This fort stands proudly in the Arabian Sea, just 500 metres off the coast. It was built in the 17th century by Malik Amber, an Abyssinian Muslim who served the Ahmednagar sultanate.

       Janjira Fort

Marathas tried to conquer the fort but failed largely due to its impregnable defence & strategic location. The Britishers conquered this fort in the 18th century and used it as for naval base and prison.

One of the remarkable features of Janjira fort is its architecture. This island fort is built entirely out of local basalt rocks. It is considered one of the strongest marine forts in India.

Another island fort ‘Padmadurg’ or Kasa fort, can be seen near Janjira fort, which was built by Chhatrapati Sambhaji, son of Chhatrapati Shivaji maharaj, to challenge Janjira.

Visitors can enter the Janjira fort by taking a short boat ride from Rajapuri village on the coast. There are several accommodation options near the beach, ranging from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts. The local seafood is a must-try.
